US Syria base under attack

A major US military base in Syria’s southern Homs province has come under a drone attack. The strike has hit al-Tanf base near Syria’s border with Iraq and Jordan. A US official has confirmed the coordinated attack saying no American troops stationed in the outpost has been injured or killed. According to the unnamed official, the strike appeared to include at least one drone attack and possibly ground-fire. Al-Tanf base is located in an area controlled by militants fighting the Syrian government. The United States has military forces in Syria’s northeast and southwest without any authorization from Damascus.

Iran-Russia military ties

The Chief of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces says Iran and Russia have reached QUOTE good agreements to bolster defense cooperation. Major General Mohammad Baqeri made the remark after meeting Russian military officials in St. Petersburg. Baqeri said the conclusion of arms deals and their implementation would considerably bolster bilateral ties. The top general said the two sides are also negotiating a comprehensive strategic document. He added that the document would boost cooperation in military and defense fields, including fighting terrorism and holding joint drills. Details of the Iran-Russia military agreements have not been disclosed. However, Baqeri said on Monday that his visit to Russia was aimed at following up on a deal for buying fighter jets and attack helicopters.

UK security fears

The United Kingdom has raised the terrorism threat level to members of Parliament from moderate to substantial. The threat to the British lawmakers is now the same as the country’s overall level, which means an attack is likely. This comes after Friday’s fatal stabbing of David Amess. The Conservative lawmaker was talking with voters in the town of Leigh-on-Sea when he was attacked. Police arrested a British man of Somali origin at the scene. The attack is being treated as a terror incident. The 69-year-old politician was the second sitting lawmaker murdered in just over five years.
