Zakzaky sues security over passport

Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife Zeenat are asking the Nigerian court to enforce their fundamental right to movement by ordering the Nigerian Department of State Services to release their passports.

The case, filed by Zakzaky’s lawyers at the Federal High Court Abuja indicated that the Secret police have placed a red flag and travel restrictions on the passports of Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife.Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife Zeenat need their passports to travel for urgent medical treatment abroad.

Zakzaky’s lawyers said that placing restrictions on the passports of the Islamic cleric and his wife constitutes a threat to their lives.

The case has just been filed and will only come up for hearing when it has been assigned to a judge. But Zakzaky's lawyers are optimistic that the hearing will commence soon.

Zakzaky supporters said the action of the Secret police is unconstitutional.

Sheikh Zakzaky is reported to have a dangerous and an unusual amount of lead and cadmium in his blood when he was shot by Nigerian security forces. His doctors have since advised that Zakzaky be immediately hospitalized to remove the dangerous substances from his body.
