A shooting incident has left three US Postal Service employees at a Memphis postal facility dead, authorities said.

The shooting happened on Tuesday afternoon at the East Lamar Carrier Annex, according to the Memphis Police Department.

One of the victims was identified as 37-year-old Demetria Dortch by WHBQ and another victim was identified as James Wilson, a USPS manager, by his cousin Roxanne Rogers, according to Commercial Appeal.

The suspected shooter, who was also a USPS employee, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, said FBI Memphis spokesperson Lisa-Anne Culp.

"The Postal Service is saddened at the events that took place today in Memphis," the USPS said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the family members, friends and coworkers of the individuals involved. The Postal Service will be providing resources to all employees at the East Lamar Carrier Annex in the coming days and weeks."

The incident is the third high-profile workplace shooting in the Memphis area in recent weeks. On 23 September, a shooting at a Kroger grocery store in Collierville left one person killed and 14 others injured. The suspected shooter, a third-party vendor for Kroger, died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.

Also, a week later, a teenage boy shot and critically injured another boy inside a Memphis school.

US representative Steve Cohen, a Memphis Democrat, raised concerns over increasing shooting incidents, calling the post office “the latest site of gun violence” in the Memphis area.

“Today’s shooting at the postal facility in Orange Mound is yet another example of why I am concerned that too many guns are out there and in possession of people who aren’t able to control their anger,” he said. “I express my profound condolences to all those affected by this terrible event.”

Tuesday’s incident marked the first shooting in 11 years at a post office in West Tennessee. On 18 October 2010, two mail workers were fatally shot during a robbery at a post office in rural town of Henning.
