World Wrestling C'ships: Iran's Ghasempour wins gold in 92kg category

The 2021 Wrestling World Championships underway in the Norwegian Capital Oslo, where Iran’s Freestyle Team have managed to earn 1 gold and 3 silver medals on day 3 of the event.

The Iranians who bagged 2 gold medals on Sunday, also had a great performance on Monday, with Kamran Ghasempour grabbing the Gold in 92kg category. The 25-year old defeated J’den Cox of the United States in the semifinals, and delivered another powerful performance in the final, to beat Magomed Kurbanev of the Russian Wrestling Federation 8-4, and take team Iran’s gold tally to three.

In the 79kg category, Iranian youngster, Mohammad Nokhodi, suffered a 5-1 defeat against Jordan Burroughs to settle for Silver. The American veteran frustrated Nokhodi with his Hand fighting, which did not allow the 20-year old to perform well. Barroughs has now clinched his 4th gold at the World Championships, and remains unbeaten against Iranian Wrestlers.

In the 57 kg category, Alireza Sarlak bagged another Silver for Team Iran, in his 1st appearance at the World Championships. He suffered a 5-3 loss against America’s Thomas Gilman, who had won Bronze at the Tokyo games.

In the 65kg class, Amir-Mohammed Yazdani had to Settle for the Silver as well, after losing in just 2 minutes by technical superiority against European champion, Zagir Shakhiev of the Russian Wrestling Federation.

Meanwhile, in the 97kg class semifinals, Mojtaba Goleij missed the chance to reach the final after suffering a 3-2 defeat in a hard-fought battle against Tokyo Games silver medalist, Kyle Snyder of the USA. The Iranian Champion had a 1-nothing advantage before the break, and managed to add one more point to take 2-1 lead with 40 seconds remaining. However, with less than 10 seconds to go, Snyder used his experience to add another 2 points, to set up a Finalee against his archival Abdulrashid Sadulaev of Russia, in a repeat of the Tokyo Olympics’ final.
