Iran’s Yazdani beats US wrestler to win gold medal in world championships

Iran’s freestyle wrestling team had a great day in the world championships currently underway in Oslo, as Hassan Yazdani bagged the first gold medal of Team Iran after beating American David Taylor 6-2 in the 86 kg category final.

In a repeat of the Tokyo Games final, Yazdani grappled with his American opponent and managed to finish the first round 3-nil. Taylor then started the 2nd round energetically and managed to close the gap to a single point.

But the Iranian champion who was seeking to avenge the defeat in the Olympics games, collected 2 more points to earn his 3rd gold in the world championships.

Meanwhile, 4 other Iranian Freestyle wrestlers managed to book spots in their respective weight class finals. In the 57 kg category, Alireza Sarlak managed to beat a Turkish wrestler to set up a final against American Thomas Gilman.

Also, in the 65kg class, Amir Mahammad Yazdani reached the final by defeating his Kyrgyz opponent and in the 79kg category, Mohammad Nokhodi overcame Georgian westerner to meet 4-time world Champion, Jordan Burroughs.

Finally, in a hard-fought wrestling contest in the 92kg category, Kamran Ghasempour managed to defeat American J’den Cox to seal a spot in the final. The showpiece events will be held on Monday.
