Taliban denounce US for violating Afghanistan’s airspace

Afghanistan’s Deputy Minister of Information and Culture Zabihullah Mujahid says the United States has violated the country’s airspace by its drones.

He accused Washington of violating all international laws as well as a US-Taliban peace deal signed between the two sides. He said the violations must be corrected and prevented.

Mujahid's statements followed remarks by Pentagon spokesman John Kirby who said the US retains all necessary authorities to execute counter-terrorism operations.

Kirby also said Washington remains confident in its capabilities moving forward without speaking to specific rules of engagement surrounding airstrikes.

Analysts say since the US has not fulfilled its commitments to Afghanistan over the past 20 years, it is not expected to honor other pacts like the Doha deal with the Taliban.

Given that the US is insisting on continuing drone strikes in Afghanistan without coordination with the Taliban, the group has warned the US of the negative consequences of violating Afghanistan’s air space.

The US claims that it targets terrorist groups like Daesh with its airstrikes. However, evidence on the ground shows that innocent Afghans are usually the real victims of such attacks.

One of the last US drone strikes was in Kabul on August 29, which killed 10 members of a family including six children.
