US military bases worldwide

For decades the US has been trying to police the world by establishing foreign military bases as well as launching military intervention across the globe. Currently, the Pentagon controls around 750 military bases in some 80 foreign countries across the globe. While 20 years of military presence in Afghanistan led to a big failure for the US, why does Washington feel it has to police the world?
