McConnell: Biden not going to be removed from office

Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell has asked his fellow party members to forget about the removal of US President Joe Biden from office, reiterating that there would be no impeachment.    

Asked during an event in Kentucky on Wednesday whether or not he is in favor of impeaching the president over his handling of withdrawal from Afghanistan, he replied that “the president is not going to be removed from office.”

“There's a Democratic House, a narrowly Democratic Senate. That's not going to happen," McConnell added.

The Kentucky senator, however, urged the Republicans to use the next year's midterm election as an opportunity to hold the president accountable.

"The report card you get is every two years," McConnell noted. "I think the way these behaviors get adjusted in this country is at the ballot box."

Republicans need to win a handful of seats in the House and just one seat in the Senate to regain the control of the both chambers.

"I do think we're likely to see a typical kind of midterm reaction to a new administration ... Typically there is some buyer's remorse," he said.

The comments by McConnell come after a number of Republican lawmakers in the House and Senate, including senator Lindsey Graham, called for Biden's impeachment over his botched withdrawal of the US troops from Afghanistan, which led to the takeover of Kabul by the Taliban.
