3rd wave of Covid-19 batters Gaza amid the Israeli blockade

The Gaza Strip has entered a third Covid wave with over 1,300 new infections being discovered daily. Infections include the extremely dangerous Delta variant.

People in the blockaded enclave are flocking to vaccination centers every day to get their coronavirus shots.

The recent surge in infections and deaths is threatening to overwhelm hospitals weakened by years of Israeli blockade and wars.

On Tuesday, over 300,000 Gazans received their Covid-19 vaccinations.

Covid-19 has complicated the already dire humanitarian situation in the impoverished coastal sliver, threatening the socioeconomic welfare of people in Gaza as much as their health.

Currently there are some 12,000 active coronavirus cases in the Gaza Strip. UNICEF (the United Nations Children’s Fund) has played a major role in providing the blockaded enclave with badly needed Coronavirus vaccines.

The weakness of the healthcare system makes Gaza's population highly vulnerable to further major outbreaks of the deadly pandemic.

Rights groups say Israel’s illegal practices continue to compound the risk of Coronavirus infection for nearly two million Palestinians living in the blockaded coastal strip. The measures, they say, are making it extremely difficult to combat the deadly virus.
