Students all around the world go to universities to learn. Learning more often than not occurs when different ideas are heard and debated.
As part of the intellectual society, students do not appreciate being told what views they are allowed and not allowed to listen to whether they agree with it or not. Universities are an environment where you are intelligent enough to decide right from wrong yourself.
Freedom of speech is another slogan repeated over and over again in the United States. Numerous intellectuals and faculty members of universities have been harassed, coerced and lost their jobs over expressing their views and activism.
Most recently, higher education institutions have denied tenure to prominent intellectuals like Cornel West at Harvard University. He is called one of the nations foremost black scholars and an outspoken progressive activist.
He accused Harvard University of intellectual and spiritual bankruptcy of deep depths. The 68- year-old scholar suggested in his resignation letter that politics was the main reason Harvard denied him tenure, citing his support for the Palestinian cause.
