Forest fires in Morocco burn for third day

Firefighters in northern Morocco were on Monday battling forest fires for a third day, local media reported, as a sweltering heatwave scorches areas of southern Europe and northern Africa.

Video published online showed large plumes of smoke rising from mountains in the northern province of Chefchaouen as a blaze raged.

In neighboring Algeria at least 65 people died, including 28 soldiers after fires tore through forested areas in the north of the country.

From Turkey to Tunisia, countries around the Mediterranean saw some of their highest temperatures in decades last week, as the United Nations climate panel warned that the world was dangerously close to runaway warming.
