Leading UK royal jailed for sexual assault freed after serving half of sentence
Simon Bowes-Lyon, the Earl of Strathmore and a relative of the Queen, jailed for sexual assault, has been released from Perth prison after serving half of his sentence.
Bowes-Lyon, 35, was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment in February this year for the late-night attack on a guest staying at Glamis Castle in Angus, where his family have been residing since the late 14th century.
According to the information that emerged during the trial at Dundee Sheriff Court in February, the earl had sneaked into the 26-year-old sleeping woman’s room and tried to pull off her nightdress. Ignoring the victim’s pleas, he had assaulted her for 20 minutes.
His victim had locked the bedroom door to prevent him from getting back in, while she was "upset and afraid" and "left shaking", the court heard at the time.
She escaped the castle the next morning and reported the matter to police immediately.
Admitting the sexual assault, the offender confessed to be "drunk to excess" on the night of the assault, but acknowledged it was "no excuse" for his actions.
In spite of the fact that Bowes-Lyon had been placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years, he is understood to be free now, 5 months prior to finishing his sentence time, while his victim still feels panicked in every day settings.
Bowes-Lyon is a great-great nephew of the Queen Mother and a son of a cousin of Queen Elizabeth II.
