A US police officer has died during a shooting outside the Pentagon building, multiple reports say.

According to US media reports, the shooting event caused a lockdown of the building in Washington, DC, after it occurred on the bus platform on the Pentagon complex.

"The Pentagon has lifted the lock down and has reopened. Corridor 2 and the Metro entrance remains closed. Corridor 3 is open for pedestrian traffic,”  the Pentagon Force Protection Agency said later.

Thousands of Pentagon personnel use the Metro Bus platform every day to enter or leave the building.

Arlington Fire and EMS tweeted that they "did encounter multiple patients," while responding to an "active violence incident" in the area of the Pentagon Metro.

So far this year,185 police officers have been shot out of whom 35 have lost their lives to gunfire

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority has bypassed the area to prevent mass transit to the complex.

"We will continue to do so until we are advised it is safe," WMATA spokesperson Sherri Ly told CNN.
