Former movie producer Harvey Weinstein has been extradited from New York to Los Angeles to face more sexual assault charges.

Weinstein is wanted in Los Angeles for trial on 11 charges of attacking five women between 2004 and 2013.

He was convicted in New York in February 2020 for sexual assault and rape and was sentenced to 23 years in prison.

A jury on Feb. 24 found Weinstein, 67, guilty of sexually assaulting former production assistant Mimi Haleyi and raping former aspiring actress Jessica Mann.

The latest charges he will face in Los Angeles include forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, sexual battery by restraint, and sexual penetration by use of force.

On Tuesday, the New York department of corrections said, “This morning at approximately 9.25 custody of Mr. Harvey Weinstein was handed over to the appropriate officials for transport to the state of California per a court order.”

The former Hollywood mogul denied the Los Angeles charges, with his spokesperson Juda Engelmayer saying on Tuesday, “Harvey Weinstein has always maintained that every one of his physical encounters throughout his entire life have been consensual. That hasn’t changed.”

Weinstein has fought extradition on medical grounds.

Engelmayer also said, “We will be fighting so that Harvey can receive his needed medical care and of course, so that he can be treated fairly.”

“Due process, presumption of innocence and a fair trial are all still his right,” he added.

Following investigations from the New Yorker and the New York Times in 2017, over 80 women accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct. Those allegations helped spark the global #MeToo movement, a social movement against sexual abuse and sexual harassment.

Those women, who included famous actresses, accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct stretching back decades.

Weinstein has, however, denied the allegations and said that any sex was consensual.
