Syria sanctions

The Syrian foreign minister slams the US and the European Union for imposing sanctions and taking other coercive measures against his country. In a virtual address to a session of the Non-Aligned Movement, Faisal Mikdad said the Western sanctions have had a catastrophic impact on the day-to-day life of Syrians. He noted that the restrictions have hampered the government’s ability to meet the basic needs of the people of Syria. Mikdad also stressed his country’s determination to end all illegitimate foreign military presence. The top Syrian diplomat condemned the Israeli regime for its repeated attacks on the Arab country, as well as its occupation of Syria’s Golan Heights.

Bahrain executions

A report shows the death sentencing in Bahrain has increased by over 600 percent since the 2011 popular uprising against the Al-Khalifa monarchical rule. The joint report is compiled by the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy and the UK-based anti-death penalty group, Reprieve. It said at least 51 people were ordered executed since anti-regime protests erupted in Bahrain over a decade ago. That is while seven people were sentenced to death in the previous decade. According to the report, some 26 men are facing imminent execution on death row, with many of them alleging torture by authorities. It cited cases of forced confessions, electric shocks, beatings and attempted rape. The report also slammed the UK over its continued support for Bahrain, saying the Bahraini regime is using UK funding to whitewash human rights abuses.

US inflation jump

Official data show the United States has witnessed its largest hike in inflation in over a decade last month. According to a report by the US Labor Department, the consumer price index jumped by 5.4 percent in the 12 months ending in June, hitting its highest rate since August 2008. With the Covid-19 restrictions eased, American consumers have resumed spending and traveling, but are being faced with soaring prices. According to the report, the price of gasoline has surged by over 45 percent over the past year. This is while Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell says the factors driving up the prices will disappear in the coming months. He’s set to appear in Congress on Wednesday for a two-day questioning by lawmakers.
