Spain have defeated 10-man Switzerland, 3-1 on penalties, following a 1-1 draw in Saint Petersburg, to book a spot in the semifinals.

Spain went ahead after 8 minutes of play, when Denis Zakaria deflected Jordi Alba’s strike into his own net. But, Xherdan Shaqiri capitalized on a defensive error to score the equalizer in the 68th minute, before Remo Freuler was sent off for a reckless challenge. The Swiss then resorted to a defensive mode, dragging the game into extra-time and then the penalty shootouts.

Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon saved Fabian Schar and Manuel Akanji’s shots, while Ruben Vargas fired over the bar, as Spain moved into to last 4, with Mikel Oyarzabal smashing home the winning spot-kick.
