Agriculture industry

Sugar has many uses. Most people are familiar with the edible uses of sugar, but in fact it has many industrial uses as well such as making medicine, bio-fuel, cosmetics, bioplastics… and so much more.

Iran has around 50 sugar factories spread across the country with a nominal annual production capacity of 5.2 million tons of refined sugar.

Sugar is processed using both sugarcane and sugar beet which is cultivated in large amounts.

West Azerbaijan and Khuzestan provinces are the largest producers of sugar beet and sugarcane respectively.

Iran meets most of its domestic sugar needs with its productions, but because the agriculture sector is heavily tied to weather conditions, some sugar is imported from abroad.

Sugar production is considered a strategic industry as it is used to make other products which can be sold for higher profits versus selling raw sugar.

The industry is mainly driven by millions of people with a sweet tooth. Statistics from Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization show that confectionery and chocolate industry are the second largest exporters in the country’s food sector after the dairy industry.

Exports in confections and chocolate sector have risen considerably in the last year.
