Several people killed, injured in knife attack in Germany

Several people have been killed and injured after being attacked by a man wielding a large knife in a southern city in Germany.

Police said on Twitter that the attack occurred in Wuerzburg in early Friday morning.

“The attacker was overpowered after the police used firearms,” police said. “There are several injured as well as fatalities.”

Police did not give a number for the casualties, but the Bild newspaper reported that at least three people were killed and six others injured.

They said there is no danger to the population, but declined to immediately provide further information.

Bild also said the suspect had been shot in the leg.

Footage shared on social media showed bystanders confronting a man wielding a large knife.

Wuerzburg, located between Munich and Frankfurt. is a city of about 130,000 people in Bavaria.

The motive of the latest attack is still unknown, but the European country has been on high alert after several deadly attacks by Takfiri terror groups over the past years.
