Number of coronavirus patients admitted to hospitals in the Iranian province of Tehran, where the capital is located, is increasing as a senior official urges expansion of vaccinations to cover the elderly population in the province.

Alireza Zali, the top government official watching over coronavirus issues in Tehran, said on Monday that outpatient coronavirus referrals to hospitals in the province had increased by 3.3% in the working week to June 18.

Zali said the number of coronavirus hospitalizations in the Tehran province had reached a total of 4,192 as of Monday of which some 1,152 patients needed emergency care.

He said almost all cities in the province of 15 million people, including the capital city, were on orange alert, meaning that they still face a high risk of virus resurgence.

The official said the pace of vaccinations against the disease in the province needed to be accelerated because most of the people infected with the virus are the elderly.

“The province of Tehran is among the five provinces (in Iran) with the largest population of the elderly and the vaccination coverage is of key importance,” said Zali.

Iran is planning to ramp up vaccinations against the coronavirus this week with the rollout of jabs developed inside the country.

Nearly 5.5 million people have received a first shot of COVID-19 vaccines as part of a national inoculation program that began in late December.

The country has managed to contain a fourth wave of the disease that began in late April.

The Iranian health ministry said on Monday that the daily number of deaths from the coronavirus had reached 136 while total positive cases reported over the past 24 hours stood at 10,485.
