English, French imperil African languages

Despite an estimated 2,000 languages being spoken across Africa, for many to succeed in the continent, they have no option but to learn English or French the languages of the countries which colonised most of Africa.

Now experts are warning that this trend might lead to the extinction of indigenous languages. Renowned African writer Ngugi wa Thiong'o says abandoning one’s indigenous language is tantamount to enslavement.
