Florida high school pauses yearbook distribution over pages on Black Lives Matter

The Black Lives Matter spread found in the West Broward High School yearbook.

A high school in the US state of Florida has suspended the distribution of its yearbook amid concerns about two pages that focused on the Black Lives Matter movement.

According to Elise Twitchell, a senior at West Broward High School and co-editor-in-chief of the yearbook, dubbed "The Edge," it contains a two-page report that shows the students participating in the BLM protests, which began in 2013 in response to the killing of a Black teenager in Florida.

"I found out that it was because there were some complaints from teachers and from parents about the content of the BLM page," said David Fleischer, the yearbook adviser. "That it didn't seem objective, there were no opposing views. They mentioned the fact that we should have had, or could have included, something like Blue Lives Matter, All Lives Matter."

Meanwhile, the West Broward High School confirmed Fleischer's comments about the yearbook in a statement on Wednesday.

"Broward County Public Schools supports and encourages students' freedom of expression. After concern was expressed last week regarding editorial student content included in the West Broward High School yearbook about the Black Lives Matter movement, the school's administration paused distribution late Friday afternoon while the concerns were carefully reviewed," the statement said.

The Black Lives Matter movement gained a new momentum last year after George Floyd, an African American man, was brutally killed by police outside a shop in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in May 2020.

However, there has been no let-up in incidents of racist violence in different states of US, mostly perpetrated by police against African-Americans and Asian-Americans.

This disconcerting surge in attacks on people of color in the US in recent years have been attributed at times to former US President Donald Trump's racist rhetoric.

His successor Joe Biden's brief stint so far has been marked by protests over a spike in murderous assaults by police, with people calling for police reform and an end to racial injustice.
