Iran has marked the 58th anniversary of the 1963 uprising against the US-backed regime of Pahlavi.
On that June day, crowds took to the streets in protest against the arrest of the late founder of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Khomeini by the Pahlavi regime.
In several cities, many people were killed in the violent crackdown by the regime forces.
Over a decade later, Imam Khomeini spearheaded Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution. The regime was overthrown.
The June 5 uprising is now a matter of national pride, remembered annually across the Islamic Republic.
