Magnitude 5.0 quake jolts southwestern Iran, no casualties reported

An earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale hits southwestern Iran.

An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale has shaken Fars and Kohgiluyeh provinces in southwestern Iran.

The tremor struck a non-residential area near Baba Monir village at 1:05 a.m. local time on Saturday (2035 GMT on Friday) at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Rahim Azadi, director general of Fars province's crisis management department, told reporters that aid workers had been sent to the quake-hit region to evaluate the situation.

According to preliminary evaluations, the temblor has not caused any casualties, he added.

Mehdi Valipour, head of the Relief and Rescue Organization of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, said the epicenter of the earthquake was a non-residential area between Baba Monir and Gachsaran county in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad.

He noted that there were no reports on possible damage from the quake in nearby villages.

Iran experiences frequent seismic activity as it sits where two major tectonic plates meet.
