The United Nations top rights body has agreed to launch an investigation into crimes committed during the recent Israeli onslaught on Gaza. Israel denounces the decision as shameful while Palestinians welcome the move.

France recession

France, the eurozone's second biggest economy, has fallen into recession in the first quarter of 2021. That’s according to a revised official data. The Insee statistics agency says France’s GDP contracted by 0.1 percent in the first three months of the year. The agency had previously estimated 0.4 percent growth. The country had already experienced one and a half percent contraction in the last quarter of 2020. The revision is highly unusual in France and underscores challenges the governments has faced in responding to the coronavirus pandemic which has taken a heavy toll on the global economy.
