Iranian mourners commemorate martyrdom anniversary of first Shia Imam

Iranians have marked the martyrdom anniversary of the first Shia Imam, Imam Ali, while observing social distancing due to the coronavirus pandemic. Here's a report to tell us more about the ceremonies in the holy city of Mashhad, where the shrine of the great grandson of Imam Ali, Ali ibn Musa al-Reza, is located.
Every year, the mourners come together in mosques and religious sites nationwide to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Ali. During the ceremonies, elegies are recited; sermons are made in honor of this great figure which is the symbol of justice among Shias.
This year, like the previous year, people have been avoiding indoor gatherings to prevent the spread of COVID-19, which has killed thousands in Iran up to now.
On this sorrowful occasion, people extended condolences to Muslims across the world. This occasion also coincides with “The Nights of Glory” in which the fate of everyone is decided according to Muslims. The ceremony is held on three nights of Ramadan.
Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib was martyred on 21st of Ramadan due to his injuries two days after Ibn Muljam Moradi struck him on his head with a poisoned sword in the mosque of Kufa during morning prayers.
