US faces backlash over North Korea policy review

US President Joe Biden called North Korea a threat in his first address to Congress, as his administration announced it had completed a long-awaited review of American policy toward Pyongyang. Biden’s remarks were soon followed up by his Director of National Intelligence.
North Korea reacted harshly to the comments, with a leading official saying the US would face a very grave situation if it did not end its hostile policy. In South Korea, Washington’s rhetoric was met with disappointment.
North Korea has been subject to US-led United Nations Security Council Sanctions which Pyongyang would like to be suspended. There are also other moves the US could make to get talks going.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in is set to meet with President Biden at the oval office later this month, where he is likely to press for engagement between the US and North Korea.
US national security advisor Jake Sullivan said Sunday the Washington’s policy is not aimed at hostility, but solutions. The question is whether those solutions involve US incentives that will bring Pyongyang to the negotiating table.
