Giuliani raid strikes fear in Trump inner circle

An FBI raid on the Manhattan apartment and office of Rudy Giuliani is striking fear in the inner circle of former US President Donald Trump about what might be coming next.

According to remarks by anonymous advisers close to the former president, Giuliani could shift his position against Trump.

"Even the most loyal people have their breaking point," said a person close to the former President, as cited by the CNN.

A Trump adviser separately said that Giuliani's reversal of his support for Trump "wouldn't shock me at all."

Federal investigators carried out a search warrant at the home and office of Giuliani, who served as Trump's personal lawyer and thus the focus of an investigation concerning his activities in Ukraine against now-President Joe Biden.

"This was a show of force that sent a strong message to a lot of people in Trump's world that other things may be coming down the pipeline," the adviser said.

The warrant was in relation to an ongoing probe led by federal prosecutors from the Southern District of New York.

"I can't for the life of me think why you would need to send seven FBI agents to go and collect a cellphone and laptop," said the adviser, who also described the Giuliani raid as "overkill."

Giuliani has denied any wrongdoing, asserting that the search warrants indicated a "corrupt double standard" by the Justice Department.

"Republicans who are prominent supporters and defenders of President Trump... are subjected to false charges and procedures used in the past, if at all, in cases involving terrorists and organized criminals," Giuliani’s attorney Robert Costello said in a statement, reiterating that the former mayor "has done nothing wrong.”

Other Trump lawyers, such as Michael Cohen, have already flipped, withdrawing their support for the billionaire businessman.

"I think we've seen some more surprising instances of things like that happening, especially with Michael Cohen," the person close to Trump said.

Cohen has himself speculated that Giuliani could "give up Donald in a heartbeat" if faced with an indictment.

"Prior to Donald becoming president, Rudy didn't like Donald and Donald didn't like Rudy," he said earlier this week. "He certainly doesn't want to follow my path down into a 36-month sentence."
