For the 5th consecutive day India has recorded an overwhelming number of COVID-19 infections. The country logged around 350,000 fresh cases and about 2,700 deaths, raising fears of further devastation and dismay among its citizens.

Many experts say the numbers are underestimations, and that the real figures are likely to be much higher than the government figures.

By Sunday, the number of total cases in the world’s second-most populous nations stood at nearly 17,000,000, with over 192,000 deaths.

India is witnessing scenes of utter mayhem amid the new wave of the outbreak. The hospitals have been overwhelmed and are turning away patients due to a lack of beds and oxygen supplies, revealing the vulnerabilities of India’s health sector.

Many Indian states have now imposed more stringent restrictions on people’s movement. In the capital New Delhi, the lockdown has been extended for one more week as the cases are soaring rapidly.

According to some estimations, more than 300 people are infected with COVID-19 every minute across the country.
