Rocket carrying core module of China's space station arrives at launch pad

China's Long March-5B Y2 rocket

China's Long March-5B Y2 rocket, carrying the core capsule of the country's space station, was moved to the launch pad at Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in south China's Hainan Province on Friday morning.

The combination of the 20-metric-ton core module, Tianhe, and the carrier rocket was transported to the launch area along a specially built 2.7-km track. The transfer process took about 2.5 hours.

Before the launch mission, the rocket will have all its functions examined and undergo a joint test of the whole system as planned, according to the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA).

All the facilities and equipment at the launch site are in good condition, and all departments involved in the project are busy doing final preparations.

The rocket and the core module arrived at Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in February, and had been under final assembly and various tests prior to Friday's transfer.

Tianhe, which means "harmony of heavens," is 16.6 meters long and has a diameter of 4.2 meters. It has three parts — a connecting section, a life-support and control section, and a resources section.

It will be central to the space station's operations, given that astronauts will live there and control the entire station from inside.
