D-8 hails Iran’s efforts to launch international university
The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, also known as Developing-8, has reiterated its support for Iran’s efforts to set up a prestigious international university under the organization’s auspices, as members of the bloc seek closer scientific and academic exchanges to bolster their economic ties.
In a communiqué released on Thursday after the 10th Summit of Developing-8 countries hosted by Bangladesh, leaders of the bloc said they welcome Iran’s provision of finances and resources for the establishment of the D-8 International University in the western city of Hamedan.
The Dhaka Declaration 2021 hailed Iran’s move to use some of its best facilities and staff for the launch of the University while adding that the D-8 would encourage all member states to provide support for the initiative.
Turkey, a leading D-8 member, proposed the idea of setting up a major university within the D-8 when it assumed rotating presidency of the bloc in 2017.
Iran has started admitting international students under a pilot scheme launched in Hamedan’s Bu-Ali Sina University, a major academic hub in western Iran which is named after Avicenna, the great Iranian scientist and physician who is buried in the city.
Local authorities in Hamedan have promised they would dedicate a piece of land to construct separate premises for the D-8 International University.
Iran’s ministry of sciences says students that will be accepted in the University would enjoy bursaries provided by D-8 member states while admission for non-D-8 nationalities would also be possible.
The D-8 developing bloc was founded in 1997 based on an initiative by Turkey. The group comprises of Bangladesh, Malaysia, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, Nigeria and Indonesia.
