Tajik defense minister wraps up visit to Tehran

Tajikistan Defense Minister Colonel General Sherali Mirzo has wrapped up his official visit to the Islamic Republic. During his stay in the country, he held two rounds of talks with his Iranian counterpart Brigadier General Amir Hatami.

During the talks, the two sides highlighted the importance of cooperation between Tehran and Dushanbe in ensuring regional peace, stability and security.

The two ministers believe that the existing conflicts and insecurity in the region will further necessitate deeper cooperation between the two countries in the fight against terrorism and drugs trafficking.

Speaking at a press conference after the second round of talks, the Iranian defense minister said both Iran and Tajikistan are subject to terrorist threats as well as other regional countries, which have their roots in extra-regional interventions.

Meanwhile on Thursday, the visiting Tajik minister met with Iran’s Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Baqeri who said Iran and Tajikistan have agreed to establish a joint defensive and military committee.

Tajikistan’s defense minister for his part said that Dushanbe believes that [the] fight against terrorism in the region relies on the expansion of cooperation among regional countries.

At the end of the visit to Tehran by the Tajik defense minister, the two sides also signed a memorandum of understanding to widen military and defensive cooperation between the two Persian-speaking countries.
