US vows to ‘return to compliance’ with Iran nuclear deal, lift sanctions

The United States has vowed to “return to compliance” with the Iran nuclear deal and lift the illegal sanctions imposed on the country.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters Wednesday that Washington would remove sanctions “inconsistent” with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

“We are prepared to take the steps necessary to return to compliance with the JCPOA, including by lifting sanctions that are inconsistent with the JCPOA. I am not in a position here to give you chapter and verse on what those might be,” Price said.

Diplomats from major powers and the European Union met separately on Wednesday with Iran and the United States to discuss the illegal sanctions.

A US official allegedly told Reuters on condition of anonymity that the US delegation in Vienna had been briefed on the discussions.

The latest developments have drawn reaction from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking of his fear of Israel’s “annihilation.”

“A deal with Iran that threatens us with annihilation will not obligate us,” he said. “The nuclear deal with Iran is once again on the table. Such deals with extreme regimes are worthless.”

Tehran has time and again asserted that the only path for the United States to rejoin‎ the 2015 Iran nuclear deal is full compliance and removal of all sanctions.
