2022 World Cup qualifiers: Portugal 2-2 Serbia

Portugal have been held to a 2-all draw by Serbia in Belgrade in a rather controversial match in Group A of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

Portugal got on the scoresheet 11 minutes after kick-off, as Diogo Jota netted the ball home, with a precise header from a cross by Bernardo Silva.

The Liverpool striker doubled the lead for the European champions in a similar fashion before the break.

But, only a few seconds after the restart, Serbia pulled one back when Aleksandar Mitrovićscored with a header from close range.

The hosts got the equalizer after Filip Kostić tapped the ball home from inside the box on the hour mark, following a counter attack.

Portugal thought they had scored the winner in the dying moments of the match, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s effort was denied by the referee, despite the replay showing that the ball had passed the goal-line.

Portugal will next line up against Luxemburg on Tuesday, while Serbia will travel to Baku to meet Azerbaijan.
