Another US admiral warns of China’s invasion of Taiwan
A top US admiral has claimed that China will attack Taiwan and that sooner than expected.
Admiral John Aquilino, currently the head of US Pacific Fleet, became the latest military official to make the allegation.
“The rejuvenation of the Chinese Communist Party is at stake” he said during a Senate armed services committee hearing. “My opinion is this problem is much closer to us than most think, and we have to take this on.”
Pentagon press secretary John Kirby declined to “speculate about potential future operations” but said “nobody wants this to result in conflict.”
“The secretary is concerned at the significant changes that have been taking place in the PRC’s strategic forces,” Kirby said, referring to the People’s Republic of China. “And he's also concerned about the lack of transparency by Beijing about what they're doing. We would certainly welcome greater transparency about both their intentions and their modernization program. But again, nobody's interested in seeing this resulting conflict of any kind.”
Beijing says the United States is hyping up its military threat while spending millions of dollars on its military adventurism.
Earlier this month, Admiral Philip Davidson, the US top military officer in Asia-Pacific, made similar comments.
"Some US people continue to use the Taiwan issue to hype up China's military threat," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said at a press briefing in response to Admiral Davidson’s remarks earlier this month. "But in essence this is the US searching for a pretext to increase its military spending, expand its forces and interfere in regional affairs.”
Almost all countries around the world recognize China's sovereignty over Taiwan.
But, Washington has undermined China's sovereignty over the past years and stepped up arms and military support for Taiwan.
