In a shantytown in Koungou, a commune of the French Indian island of Mayotte, 230 huts are destroyed to the great despair of their inhabitants, who are looking for "a small piece of land to rebuild" their house and "rebuild" their lives.
They are left "on the road" with "nowhere to go." France's 'Elan law' provides for the destruction of illegal homes, many of which are built on land deemed unstable and exposed to potential mud and landslides.
