US expulsion from Iraq

The Iranian president has urged Iraqi officials to speed up the enforcement of a parliamentary ratification mandating the expulsion of US forces from the Arab country. In a phone call with the Iraqi prime minister, president Hassan Rouhani said the move will help establish peace and security across the region, including Iraq. He emphasized that America has always played a destructive role in the region. The Iranian president also expressed opposition to foreign meddling in Iraqi affairs, which he regards as detrimental not only to Iraq but to the entire region. He stressed Iraq's integrity and security remain a priority for Iran. In response, Prime minister Mostafa al-Kadhimi thanked Iran for helping establish peace and stability in Iraq. He also underlined the need to expand all-out bilateral relations.

US police brutality

Police in the US city of Rochester come under scrutiny after a body-cam video showed the violent arrest of an African-American woman holding her three-year-old daughter. The city's Police Accountability Board said it was disturbed by the video and that the Rochester Police Department needs to fundamentally change. The City Council said the amount of force used, coupled with the emotional damage suffered by the child, was disproportionate to the alleged crime. The incident took place on February 22nd, and the body-cam footage of the incident was released on Friday. The woman was accused of shoplifting. Police used pepper spray to subdue her and force her to lie on the ground. The woman was ultimately charged with trespassing and the arresting officer was placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

Sweden protest

A protest has been held in the Swedish capital Stockholm against coronavirus restrictions in the country. The demonstration was held in defiance of a ban on large gatherings. Police blocked a bridge in the center of the city and disperse protesters. Six officers were injured in ensuing clashes. Sweden has so far reported over 13000 covid-19 deaths. Last month, the government said it would cut opening hours for restaurants and cafes and tighten limits on the number of people allowed in shops.
