The situation is Haiti remains “dire even by Haitian standards,” says a political commentator after President Jovenel Moise told the UN Security Council on Monday that "democracy was doing well in Haiti.”

Moise says his five-year term is slated to end in 2022 – a stance backed by Washington and some international organizations – while Haitians argue that he was supposed to step down this month, on February 7.

“Here on the ground in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, there  is a very unstable climate.,” the political commentator told Press TV in an interview on Tuesday. “The socio-economic situation here in Haiti is dire, even by Haitian standards.”

Haitian opposition and civil society groups are refusing to tolerate the US and the Organization of American States support for the government of Moise, vowing to continue fighting until their demands are met.

“[The OAS] have been super hypocritical; they are always trying to shine a light on Venezuela … or on any country that's not in the fold of the US neoliberal project, but when it comes to a country suffering as much as Haiti is right now. We hear crickets, we hear absolute silence from the OAS.”

Paramilitary troops are deployed to crack down on protesters demanding a peaceful transition of power to a government selected by people the poor Caribbean nation.

“Jovenel Moise’s mandate has ended, not to mention how many illegal things he's already done,” said the analyst. “He's trying to cling to power with the support of [US President Joe] Biden and [US ambassador to Haiti] Michelle Sison.”

Moise was elected into office in an election subsequently canceled after allegations of fraud, and then elected again a year later, in 2016.

“OAS, UN, US, hands off of Haiti! Let us determine our own destiny.”

The protesters maintain that the government is trying to establish a new dictatorship in Haiti.
