Pharmaceutical crimes in Africa

Africans have for decades been used for unethical clinical trials by large Western pharmaceutical companies in clear violation of their basic human rights. There have been many incidents of unethical experimentation, clinical trials lacking properly informed consent, and forced medical procedures in Africa.

The clinical trial of the Pfizer drug Trovan in Nigeria is one of the most recent cases that were widely publicized.

This week Africa Today is focusing on the long history of crimes committed by Western scientists pharmaceutical giants in Africa. These crimes have come into focus amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Since the outbreak there have been concerns that history will repeat itself and Africans or people of African descent will be used by Western pharmaceuticals to conduct unethical clinical trials for Covid-19 drugs and vaccines.
