Former US President Donald Trump and the Republican National Committee (RNC) raked in about $86 million through GOP’s online fundraising platform WinRed over the last five weeks of 2020.

The donations made between Nov. 24 and the end of last year were disclosed in a Friday filing with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) by WinRed.

According to the report first published by Bloomberg, the bulk of the money he raised - $68 million - flowed to Trump Make America Great Again, which is supported by small-dollar donors.

The ex-president also used Trump Victory, which focuses on big donors, raising just $24,965 online. Meanwhile, the RNC raised $3.5 million independently of Trump’s committees.

In addition, Trump's campaign raised $14.1 million from online donors, while his newly formed Save America political action committee got $501,224.

Trump raised the money while claiming that the disputed presidential election was rigged, causing him to lose to Democrat Joe Biden.

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, eight individuals who were paid by the campaign, either as staffers or independent contractors, besides a firm that organized events for it, had helped organize the Trump rally near the White House that preceded the invasion on the Capitol on January 6.

The Democratic-controlled US House of Representatives impeached Trump over his role in the invasion that left five people dead, including a member of law enforcement. He was blamed for inciting an insurrection when the lawmakers were busy certifying the victory of Biden.

WinRed also raised $207 million for GOP candidates and committees in total during that period. Most of that amount poured into the hotly contested Senate runoff elections in Georgia on Jan. 5.

Georgia Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler lost to Democrats Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock during the elections, which resulted in the Democratic Party taking control of the Senate.
