The first reactor adopting China's third-generation nuclear reactor technology has been put into commercial operation, announced China National Nuclear Corporation in Beijing on Saturday.

The opening of the reactor, Fuqing No.5 nuclear power unit, indicates that China now is the one of the leading countries in nuclear power technology.

The technology adopted by the reactor, Hualong One, is independently developed by China with its more than 30 years of experience on nuclear reactor research, design, manufacturing, construction and operation. And its technical indicators have reached the advanced international level.

"Its design service life is 60 years. It adopts the design of 177 sets of fuel core. The refueling cycle is 18 months. And the power plant's utilization rate is as high as 90 percent. In addition, it employs a security system combining 'active and passive' technologies, dual-layer containment and other technologies, for which its safety performance meets the highest international standards," said Zhao Hao, project commissioning chief of Hualong One.

The reactor started construction on May 7, 2015. Involving nearly 200,000 people, the project built a whole system of third-generation nuclear reactor model standards totally developed by China.

The reactor is expected to significantly enhance the competitiveness of China's nuclear power industry. At the same time, it will play an important role in optimizing China's energy structure and promoting green development.

"Each nuclear power unit has an assembled capacity of 1.161 million and generates nearly 10 billion kWh per year, which can meet the annual electricity demand of 1 million people in a moderately developed country. At the same time, it helps reduce standard coal consumption by 3.12 million tons and carbon dioxide emissions by more than 8 million tons per year, which is equivalent to planting more than 70 million trees," said Xu Ligen, project chief of Hualong One.
