In rebuke to Trump, Barr pours cold water on election fraud, Hunter Biden probe

US Attorney General William Barr says there is no need for a special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden or allegations of election fraud promoted by lame-duck President Donald Trump.

Barr, who is leaving office this week, made the comments during a press conference at the Justice Department Monday.

“I think to the extent that there’s an investigation I think that it’s being handled responsibly and professionally currently within the department,” Barr told reporters about US President-elect Joe Biden’s son. “To this point, I have not seen a reason to appoint a special counsel and I have no plan to do so before I leave.”

Trump and his allies in Congress have raised questions about potential conflicts of interest from Hunter Biden’s position on the board of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma at the time his father was vice president.

Barr also rejected the necessity of a special counsel to investigate claims of fraud in the 2020 presidential election, which Trump has officially lost.

"If I thought a special counsel at this stage was the right tool and was appropriate I would name one, but I haven’t and I’m not going to,” said the outgoing AG.

The US president announced Barr’s early departure last week after he refused to pursue the supposedly baseless allegations through his department.
