UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid 2-0 Monchengladbach

Over UEFA Champions League, hosts Real Madrid have advanced to the knockout stage after beating Monchengladbach 2-nil, thanks to a double by Karim Benzema.

It took less than 10 minutes for the Frenchman to put Madrid ahead with a header into the left side of the goal. Benzema then completed a brace for the home side as he sent the ball past the keeper via another header in the 32nd minute.

Two goals in the first half were enough to put Los Blancos top of Group B as they wrapped up the Group stage with 10 points out of 6 matches. On the other side, Monchengladbach also advanced to the next round, finishing 2nd with 8 points.

Elsewhere in the Champions League, Italian visitors Atalanta have edged past Ajax 1-nil in a decider match, to book their place among the last 16.

With 5 minutes to go, Luis Muriel ran on to a smart pass from Remo Freuler and buried the ball in the back of the net after going one-on-one with the keeper.

Thanks to Muriel, Atalanta finished the Group Stage 2nd in Group D with 11 points, securing their ticket to the next round of the tournament for the 2nd time in two consecutive years. Meanwhile, Ajax are out of the Champions League as they finished 3rd with only 7 points.

Also in the Champions League and in a battle for the top spot in Group G, Cristiano Ronaldo guided Juventus to a crushing 3-nil victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou.

Lionel Messi's long term rival Cristiano Ronaldo put the visitors ahead, 13 minutes into the match from the spot, after being fouled by Barca defender Ronald Araujo. Only 7 minutes later, Juve doubled the lead after Weston McKennie netted with a brilliant bicycle-kick from inside the box.

The Old Lady showed no mercy after the break, and Ronaldo put the match to bed with a VAR awarded penalty in the 52nd minute. With the result, both teams booked a place in the knockout stage, but Juventus finished the Group Stage in style as the top team.
