Tens of thousands of Sudanese have bid farewell to their last democratically-elected prime minister, who died of COVID-19-related complications at 84.

According to the National Umma Party, which he led until his death, Sadiq al-Mahdi, died in hospital in the United Arab Emirates, where he was receiving treatment after becoming infected with the coronavirus in October.

Al-Mahdi served as Sudan's prime minister in the mid-60s and again in the 80s before he was overthrown in a coup in 1989, which led to rise to power of president Omar Al-Bashir. After being forced out of office, al-Mahdi remained a leading politician in Sudan.

In a statement, Sudan's prime minister described him as one of the most important figures of thought, politics, literature, and wisdom in the country.

Meanwhile, NUP said that the party will continue to follow the anti-Israel policies taken by the late Sadiq al-Mahdi.

Al-Mahdi was a well-known Sudanese political figure, who played an important role in public affairs and wrote several books addressing the situation in Sudan.

For more than six decades, Sadiq al-Mahdi was an icon of democracy, Islamic thought, and a strong opponent of imperialism in Sudan and abroad.
