Esper should have never been appointed DoD chief in the first place: Analyst

A political analyst says former US Defense Secretary Mark Esper should have never been appointed to the position after President Donald Trump fired him in the wake of his election loss.

“Somebody like Esper for example seems to have offended Trump because of his actions regarding the military protection that Trump got when he walked over into photo opportunity to the church very near the White House,” James Jatras, a former Senate foreign policy adviser in Washington, told Press TV on Wednesday. “That's not necessarily a very good reason to fire Esper but frankly, there are lots of good reasons that Esper should never have been in that job in the first place.”

He further asserted that the US election is still far from over and Joe Biden, the projected winner, should not yet be recognized as the president-elect.

“There is no transition. Joe Biden is not the president-elect. This election is still being contested and we'll see what happens.”

Trump fired Esper after his loss, a move that has been met with a flurry of resignations at the Pentagon.

“If it turns out Trump is leaving office yes he may end up throwing some people out the door during his final weeks in office, frankly, people that should not have been there in the first place and that would in my mind be simply an action of frustration and a fit of pique, maybe of ego in removing some of these officials,” Jatras said.

Trump has appointed Director of the National Counterterrorism Center as the acting secretary of defense with Esper saying he was no “yes man” during his tenure.

“Esper has made a point of saying that he's not a yes man he's not a Yesper, and he's pushed back on Trump which begs the question, why was he there in the first place,” said the political commentator. “But let's keep in mind nobody should count this election as being over yet.”
