Libya ceasefire deal
Libyas warring sides have signed an agreement for a permanent ceasefire in all areas of Libya following five days of talks in Geneva.
The UN called the deal a historic achievement and an important turning point towards peace and stability in Libya, but the deal has been met with scepticism as previous agreement have failed to end the fighting. The African country has been the scene of fighting between the UN-backed government in the capital Tripoli and forces loyal to renegade general Khalifa Haftar in the east, which has displaced thousands and killed many more. The conflict has also escalated into a regional proxy war fueled by foreign powers pouring weapons and mercenaries into the country, with the likes of Turkey, Qatar and Italy supporting the Tripoli-based government while the Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt and France back renegade Gen Khalifa Haftar.
