Austria says it could see up to 6,000 new Covid cases a day in December. While introducing stricter measures to control the virus’ spread, the country’s Chancellor Sebastian Kurz appealed to the people to help him prevent a second lockdown.

Austria announces new measures to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus as the country has been set to red, the highest warning level, on the EU’s traffic light system.

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz says he wants to prevent a second lockdown, warning that if the current trend continues, Austria could see a record number of infections by December.

According to the new rules, no more than 6 people are allowed to attend indoor meetings and outdoor events are limited to 12 people. The use of face masks remains mandatory in enclosed spaces.

In Vienna if you go to a restaurant or bar you have to leave your contact details for future tracing. Professional events like football games or opera performances are required to have placed seating. The Vienna State Opera says it’s losing 5,000 to 10,000 euros per evening as a result of the new rule restricting audience members to one thousand.

The Austrian Health Minister has described the situation as “worrying”. Most recently the number of hospitalized cases increased by 49 percent. Police have been instructed to step up pressure and control.

Members of the opposition have criticized the government’s handling of the crisis as a piecemeal approach that’s made people lose confidence in politics and while some members of the public are worried the new measures are not strict enough others have taken to the streets to protest the mandatory rules.

Austria is recording well over a thousand new infections a day among its population of almost 9 million.
