Tensions rose once again in east Mediterranean after Ankara sent Oruc Reis vessel for seismic surveys.

The ship set sail on Monday. Greece called the move direct threat to regional peace and security and urged the EU to force sanctions against Ankara. Meanwhile France voiced its concern over the move and said Turkey must stick to commitments it made earlier.

In response, Turkish defense minister said the vessel is operating in Turkish continental shelf.

Ankara withdrew the vessel from the region mid-september in a move to open a way for diplomatic mediation by EU, however just few days after a meeting between Turkish and Greek foreign ministers held last week, Turkey decided to send back the vessel to conduct research again, which analysts say would further complicate the situation.

Relations between Turkey and Greece are complicated by a range of disputes. The two are NATO allies which is making it hard for the the EU to intervene.

As observers say Turkey’s decision to send back Oruc Reis vessel to the east Mediterranean could further inflame the already tense situation between Turkey and Greece.
