Infection is surging through the Indian subcontinent with health ministry reporting over 6.6 million confirmed cases in the country. The death toll surpassed 100,000 and officials warn of yet another surge in the coming month.

Although 5.5 million recoveries were reported but medics are having a hard time taking care of patients. India has the second-highest number of infections and third-highest death-toll in the world.

More than 60 million Indians have been tested so far for the virus, and more than a million samples are being tested daily. But the country still has one of the lowest testing rates in the world. Epidemiologists suggest that India's real infection rates are far higher. Many believe the public isn’t taking the pandemic seriously.

Trains, metros, domestic flights, markets and restaurants have reopened or resumed their work. The government also said that all schools, cinemas and swimming pools could reopen.

Health experts say that India’s future continues to be uncertain given the constant rise in number of cases. They say the country is on the course of overtaking the US and Brazil in the number of infections and becoming the nation the highest number of coronavirus cases in the world.

Since late August, India has been reporting high numbers of daily infections. Many believe the resumption of economic activity after a draconian lockdown is the main reason. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again called on people to respect restriction measures and wear face masks.
