Dominic Raab strikes defiant tone on EU trade talks

Dominic Raab is trying to appear as tough as possible during the final stretch of complex post-Brexit trade talks with the EU

Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, has launched a tirade against the European Union (EU) over stalled post-Brexit trade talks.

Addressing the Tory Party’s annual conference (virtually due to Covid-19 restrictions), Raab claimed the EU “no longer has the power to treat Britain poorly”.

Raab claimed that whilst the UK desires a “free trade deal with the EU”, any deal emerging from current strained negotiations must be “fair”.

“The days of being held over a barrel by Brussels are long gone”, Raab said stridently.

The foreign secretary’s aggressive stance on the issue contrasts with the milder tone of Prime Minister, Boris Johnson.

Following a telephone conversation with the EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, both parties reportedly “agreed the importance” of securing a post-Brexit trade deal.

According to a Downing Street statement, whilst progress had been made, “significant gaps” remain between EU and UK negotiators.

Johnson and von der Leyen spoke on Saturday (October 03) and have agreed to “speak on a regular basis”, a Downing Street spokesperson said.

For his part, the PM - who was speaking earlier during a visit to Leeds – said he wants an agreement similar to the one between the EU and Canada but stressed that the UK was prepared to walk away without a deal.

"We're resolved on either course, we're prepared for either course and we'll make it work but it's very much up to our friends and partners [in the EU]", Johnson said.
