Venezuela rejects UN report on human rights

The Venezuelan government has dismissed a recent report issued by the United Nations Human Rights Commission that accuses the administration of President Nicolas Maduro of violations of human rights.

Caracas has decried the report, saying it does not contain facts but is part of the US-led propaganda aimed at undermining Venezuela’s democratically-elected head of state.

The government says the report overlooks the fact that days ago, Maduro ordered the release of more than 100 opposition figures who were in prison for their involvement in criminal acts. They say the pardons prove Maduro’s support for national reconciliation and his regard for human rights, as his political opponents could have been penalized severely.

Legal experts say the UN report ignores the legal procedure in Venezuela.

Venezuela has denounced the US campaign to portray the Maduro government as a dictatorship. Caracas has also slammed the UN for its report on Venezuela, saying it must be based on facts, instead of US propaganda.
